You would think that everyone in the world owned a copy of Messiah by now, and that there would certainly be no need to record new ones very year. Wrong! Here's DG's 1997 entry, and it's a fine one too. The only reservation is the recorded sound, which seems to be somewhat congested at the climaxes, as though the chorus and orchestra were recorded in differing acoustic spaces. Otherwise, this is as fine an "authentic" performance as we're likely to get. --David Hurwitz

Composé à la hâte en moins d'un mois, l'oratorio le plus célèbre du Saxon fut créé à Dublin, le 13 avril 1742, sous des tonnerres d'applaudissements. Sans cesse arrangé et réorchestré, Le Messie parvint à notre époque déformé, élargi par les excès du siècle romantique. Il a trouvé, sous la baguette de McCreesh, une ferveur et une spiritualité éloignées des tempi épais habituels. Son Messie respire une nouvelle jeunesse, favorisée par les douceurs des timbres de l'orchestre qui conservent ce moelleux dans les pages de haute virtuosité. Rien de pointu ni d'aigre. Au contraire : si c'est une jubilation d'église plus que de théâtre, c'est sous une église chargée d'anges ronds et bienheureux. Les solistes ne font qu'un avec le chef dans cette grande aventure. Notons que McCreesh utilise pour cet enregistrement une des nombreuses versions du Messie laissée par Haendel de son vivant, l'une des dernières, réalisée pour une exécution de 1754. Pierre Massé
